Destination Catalina Island
This site is for travelers to Catalina Island, California, USA. The City of Avalon can only be accessed by boat or helicopter, unless you charter a private plane. There are NO ROADS or bringing your car on the ferry to Catalina. It is part of Los Angeles county, so you don’t need any special travel documents, but definitely bring your ID, cash, and credit cards! The island swells with visitors in the peak summer season to full capacity and everything sells out on a daily basis. About the Author
Living in Avalon is a twisted trip. Home to a community of viciously proud island born natives, Catalina Island is a melting pot for folks who love life on the sea and can tolerate the stress of slaving over visitors while living in a square mile town. It is not all tiny umbrellas and hammocks for the full-time employed residents, many work 2-3 jobs just to sustain the inflated expenses of living in what is likely one of the most expensive cities in Southern California. Just investigate the current gas or rent prices in Avalon for a reality check.
Words of Wisdom
May you develop a greater appreciation for folks that work in the service industry. DO NOT treat people like trash because you can afford to go on vacation in the town they call home. Please don’t be the jerk tourist that throws a fit because everything is not perfect on your vacation. When you travel you are a guest in someone else’s home town – basically a guest in their home. Let that sink in and check your perspective of what life is like for you vs. the folks living life in a year-round tourist destination. They get no rest, there is always a hustle to grind just to stay afloat in the lean months where bills keep coming, but the income from visitors doesn’t (90% of the town’s income is tourist based). Be gracious and patient and most importantly, smile when YOU are on vacation!
